An unfortunate part of adulthood is realising how expensive food shopping is.

And that's something a couple Gen Zs realised rather brutally after going food shopping.

In a video shared on TikTok by one of their mums (@amberrae_2015), two 17 year olds were given a rude awakening.

"So girls, what have we learned about grocery shopping?" said the mum, named Amber Morris.

"I don't want to be an adult," Amber's daughter replied. "I takes me an hour's worth of working, and I still can't even buy this... it's three pieces of chicken."

You can watch the video below:

The video was titled 'adulting is tough!' and it has grown to have over a million views on TikTok.

Reacting in the comments, one person wrote: "Welcome to adulthood. It SUCKS."

While another wrote: "Good mamma. We teach reality. Best thing you can do for your kids."

"Girls, I feel you. I dont want to be an adult either," said a third TikTok commenter.

"I called my mom crying the first time I went food shopping after moving out," a fourth candidly admitted.

Lots more people flooded to share their own experiences of teaching kids about finances.

"My son noticed me writing out the bills on binder paper, he looks at it, then me and said 'is this EVERY MONTH?' Yes my love," one wrote.

While another said: "This is what I've been telling my 4 year old when she asks for a quarter after doing chores."

It comes after CNBC reported earlier in the year that the price of food has risen by 25 percent since the start of the Covid pandemic.

The report added that 80 percent of Americans had felt a noticeable increase in how much their food shop was.

Yup, sounds about right for the UK too, eh?

Well done to this mum for teaching her kids the value of money and not to take anything for granted.
