The whimsical series features a magical flying shopping trolley that the duo use to travel the world for home-cooked food. Netflix describes the show as “hilarious, heartwarming and simply magical.”

In a statement on the new series, Netflix explained:

“With the help of friendly new faces like the supermarket owner, Mrs. Obama, and a magical flying shopping cart as their guide, Waffles and Mochi blast off on global ingredient missions, traveling to kitchens, restaurants, farms and homes all over the world, cooking up recipes with everyday ingredients alongside renowned chefs, home cooks, kids and celebrities.”

Obama, who also acts as executive producer alongside husband Barack, also added: “I only wish Waffles + Mochi had been around when my daughters were growing up, because it’s the kind of programme that’s fun to watch together as a family, and gives parents the peace of mind to know that their little ones are learning something, too.”

What are Michelle Obama’s cooking credentials?

She has also revealed that the new Netflix show is “an extension of my work to support children’s health as First Lady”.

The success of the Let’s Move campaign has led some commentators to label Obama as “The First Lady of Food”.

In a 2015 interview on the subject, she demonstrated just how passionately she feels about healthy eating, telling Cooking Light:

“The most powerful thing that [people] can do for their overall health is feed their bodies good nutritious food.

“If you don’t like the doctor, if you don’t like the government, if you don’t like folks messing with your life, the best thing to do is make sure you’re healthy.”

Obama might not have any formal training as a professional chef. However, her experience with the issue of children’s health makes her the perfect choice to front the new Netflix series.
